Troubleshooting Diesel Generator Start-up Issues

Experiencing difficulty starting your diesel generator or encountering start-up failures? Understanding the causes and conducting proper inspections can help identify and resolve these issues. Below, we will explore the possible causes and recommended inspection methods for diagnosing and addressing start-up problems.

Failure Phenomenon
a. No explosion sound in the cylinder, accompanied by white smoke from the exhaust pipe.
b. Black smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe.

To ensure smooth start-up, four essential conditions must be met: a. Adequate speed; b. Unobstructed oil and gas circuits; c. Proper cylinder compression; d. Correct fuel supply timing. Failure to meet these conditions can lead to difficulties or failure in starting the diesel generator.

Possible Causes
Low engine speed:

a. Insufficient starting speed;

b. Improper adjustment after pressure reducing device placement;

c. Improper valve clearance adjustment.

Restricted oil and gas paths:

a. Lack of diesel oil in the fuel tank, blocked oil pipelines, clogged fuel filter element, or closed fuel switch;

b. Extremely low ambient temperature during start-up;

c. Presence of water or air in the oil path;

d. Poor fuel spray from the fuel injection nozzle or no fuel spray at all;

e. Blocked or dirty air filter element.

Inadequate cylinder compression:

a. Excessive clearance between the piston and cylinder wall;

b. Broken piston ring or insufficient elastic force;

c. Ineffective sealing of intake and exhaust valves.

Incorrect fuel supply:

a. Injection timing set too early (may damage the injection pump) or too late;

b. Misaligned valve distribution.

Inspection Methods
Before conducting inspections, carefully observe the failure symptoms. Troubleshooting start-up difficulties in diesel generators often involves identifying and addressing multiple faults.

For diesel engines using electric starting, if the starting speed is significantly slow, it is likely an issue with the starting motor rather than the diesel engine itself. Check the starting circuit, ensuring sufficient battery power, securely tightened wires, proper functioning of the starter motor, and whether the air filter element is obstructed.

If the starting speed is normal but the engine fails to ignite, with no burst sound or intermittent burst sound in the cylinder and white smoke from the exhaust pipe, it indicates incomplete combustion or excessive moisture in the diesel fuel. Check the ambient temperature during start-up and inspect for air or moisture in the oil circuit.

Possible causes for air entering the diesel engine's supply system include loosely fixed oil circuit joints, a stuck needle valve in the fuel injection nozzle, or fuel depletion in the tank before shutdown. To address this, loosen the bleed screw on the diesel filter, the air bleed screw on the fuel injection pump, or the high-pressure oil pipe on the fuel injection pump while rotating the engine. If bubbles emerge, it signifies air in the fuel supply system. Tighten the oil circuit joints, loosen the air bleed screw, rotate the crankshaft until no bubbles are observed, and then tighten the bleeder screw before restarting. If moisture is found in the diesel fuel, replace it accordingly.

If no air or moisture mixture is present in the diesel fuel, continue inspecting the injector performance and ensuring proper fuel supply and distribution timing.

If the starting speed is normal and the cylinder compression is adequate, but the engine fails to ignite and produces no smoke, it indicates insufficient oil supply in the low-pressure oil circuit. Inspection along the oil circuit, fuel tank, diesel filter, fuel pump, and fuel injection pump is recommended to identify and rectify the issue. Often, poor diesel filtration or irregular replacement of the diesel filter causes blockages in the low-pressure oil circuit. To test for blockages, disconnect the fuel pipe from the diesel filter through the fuel injection pump.
